Mets vs Phillies game 1 disaster 6/20/25

In a significant contest that altered the landscape of the National League East, the Philadelphia Phillies secured a victory over the New York Mets with a score of 10-2.

The Phillies crushed the Mets at home, winning 10-2. That win put the Phillies in first place in the NL East, and the Mets' losing streak hit seven games, which kicked them out of the top spot after three weeks.

Zack Wheeler showcased an outstanding performance, pitching five scoreless innings and impressively striking out eight batters. Although he departed early, the Phillies' bullpen maintained control, and Tanner Banks was credited with the victory.

Blade Tidwell took the mound for the Mets, and he conceded two runs across 3.2 innings. Unfortunately, the Mets' bullpen struggled, especially in the latter innings, with Reed Garrett being charged with the loss after giving up four runs in the 7th.

The Phillies took a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning.

Subsequently, in the 6th inning, Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil achieved back-to-back home runs, momentarily equalizing the score at 2-2. The game's dynamic shifted in the 7th inning as the Phillies amassed 6 runs. A noteworthy instance was Bryson Stott's bases-clearing double, resulting in two runs, succeeded by Nick Castellanos and J.T. Realmuto each scoring on the same play. The Phillies further secured their victory by adding 2 more runs in the 8th inning.

This loss was undoubtedly a considerable setback for the Mets, resulting in their seventh consecutive defeat and the loss of their three-week lead in the NL East. For the Phillies, this victory demonstrated their tenacity, as they outscored the Mets 8-2 in the final four innings following Wheeler’s exit, thereby strengthening their position at the top of the division.

The Philadelphia Phillies, with outstanding pitching from Wheeler and a late offensive push, ultimately prevailed over the New York Mets, whose bullpen difficulties proved detrimental. This game underscored Philadelphia's comprehensive team strength and set the scene for a demanding period for New York as they seek to reverse their current losing streak.
