Welcome fans and here is another Recap report on a sticky Wednesday night at Citi Field, Juan Soto totally crushed it, hitting two home runs to get the New York Mets' offense going and win a super important game 7-3 against the Atlanta Braves. That win finally ended the Mets' awful 1-10 losing streak and was only their second win in 12 games—a huge relief against a division rival that had been kicking their butts all season.
⚾ Key Plays
Defense stepped up early: Braves' hitter Marcell Ozuna almost put Atlanta ahead in the first inning, but Mets' center fielder Jeff McNeil climbed the wall and stole a two-run homer—that play set a tough tone for New York.
The fourth inning proved pivotal, as rookie catcher Drake Baldwin equalized the score at 1-1 with a solo home run, his ninth of the season, against Mets' pitcher Clay Holmes. Subsequently, Soto capitalized on the first pitch from Braves' 20-year-old pitcher Didier Fuentes, driving it into right-center field, initiating a five-run rally. Brett Baty and Brandon Nimmo contributed with RBI singles, while Starling Marte and Francisco Lindor added sacrifice flies, ultimately removing Fuentes from the game and establishing a significant 6-1 lead for the Mets.
Regarding Juan Soto, did he have an impressive seventh inning? He hit a home run of 396 feet off the pitcher, Austin Cox. It was his 19th home run of the season and his fourth multi-homer game this month! Furthermore, that marked his 27th career multi-homer game, surpassing Jimmie Foxx's record before he reached the age of 27.
Then, the Braves tried to make a comeback in the ninth, with Ronald Acuña Jr. getting a two-run single off the Mets' rookie, Jonathan Pintaro, who was making his debut. Edwin Díaz came in to get Ozuna out with two runners on, and got his 16th save in 17 tries.
Who Killed It?
Juan Soto (NYM) achieved a 2-for-4 performance, including 2 home runs and 2 RBIs. His contributions this month total 10 home runs, significantly bolstering the Mets' offensive output.Ronny Mauricio of the New York Mets went 3-for-4, hit a home run (his third of the season), and performed exceptionally well batting eighth.Clay Holmes (NYM) earned the win (8-4) after a 5-inning performance, allowing only 1 run despite issuing 4 walks.
Regarding Didier Fuentes of ATL, in his second start, he unfortunately allowed 6 runs on 8 hits over 3.1 innings, resulting in a loss and a record of 0-2.Drake Baldwin (ATL) recorded a 1-for-3 performance, including a home run (9), representing a positive contribution for the Atlanta team. The Mets' back end of the lineup really came through: Those guys hadn't been hitting much before, but Mauricio's three hits and homer, plus some smart plays, really helped out.
The Atlanta Braves' defensive performance was commendable. Despite some pitching challenges, the outfielders executed several impressive catches, including Michael Harris II's leaping grab that prevented a two-run home run by Lindor in the eighth inning, mirroring McNeil's earlier catch in the first inning.Holmes was dealing, walking four, but still getting big outs, like when he shut down Ozuna and Riley with two guys on in the fifth.
The New York Mets (47-34) and the Atlanta Braves (37-42) are scheduled to complete their four-game series on Thursday evening. The Mets will be starting RHP Griffin Canning (7-3, 3.91 ERA), while the Braves will counter with RHP Grant Holmes (3-6, 3.97 ERA). Despite the Braves' current 5-2 lead in the season series, the Mets are focused on gaining momentum before a crucial upcoming road trip.
This victory for the Mets signifies more than just a win; it underscores the team's ongoing potential. As Soto completed his circuit of the bases following his second home run, the enthusiastic response from the Citi Field crowd reflected a renewed sense of optimism throughout Queens, fueled by the impactful performance of a key player.
